Isonzo / Soča River Basin

The Isonzo/Soča river basin is a transboundary river basin located in western Slovenia and northern Italy. The Isonzo catchment basin subtends a total area of approximately 3400 kmsq of which is about 2250 Kmsq, that is about two-thirds, in Slovenian territory and 1150 Kmsq, that is about one-third, in Italian territory. The Soča River (Italian Isonzo) is a 137 km long Alpine River with a karstic source in the Trenta Valley (1087 m), at the foot of the Julian Alps. It is an important natural asset of the Triglav National Park in the upper part of its catchment area. It is famous for its distinctive emerald colour and lively rapids in the upper reaches. Its stunning colour gave rise to its moniker, the Emerald River. After 95 km across Slovenia, the river crosses the national border at Solkan and enters Italy as the Isonzo River. In the nature reserve »Riserva Naturale della Foce dell Isonzo«, the Soča/Isonzo River flows into the Adriatic Sea in a wide delta of the Gulf of Trieste, near Molfalcone.
